Librocubicularist Dec. 2015

Holidays and Old Favorites

December is a busy time for a lot of people and our household is no exception. I work a retail job which means we are extra busy during this time so I tend to work extra hours and be extra tired. My husband's job is actually slightly less intense during the holidays but he doesn't get off work until most stores are closed so all of our errands and gift shopping need to be done on the weekends. The result is that neither of us have a ton of free time this month.

It doesn't leave much time for reading so trying to finish something new, especially in a limited time before it needs returned to the library, isn't very practical. So I spent this past month curled up with cats and a few old favorite books.

I re-read the Hobbit. Unlike a bunch of people I know who read the Hobbit as kids I don't think I read it until sometime in high school. It's a great book if you like fantasy stories and dragons which I definitely do. This time thru for some reason I noticed lots of little references to things in the larger world of Tolkien. Things like a random mention of fighting were worms of the Lost Desert... I mean, were worms? Really? What the heck is a were worm? Were Wyrm like a dragon shapeshifter maybe but its not spelled that way. Also brief discussion of different types of elves including dark elves which you never hear about again. It makes me curious to read more of Tolkien's stories. (I have only ever read the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings trilogy, and The Silmarillion)

I also read A Christmas Carol. Its not something that I do EVERY year but often. It helps me get in the holiday spirit and it's actually a really quick read. The final book that I re-visited this season is more of a New Years book. Since it's the end of the year I'm starting to think about things like resolutions, calendars, and journals. The last journal I made is really big and still mostly empty but I'm still considering making a new one so I checked out one of my favorite bookbinding books. Live & Learn: Real Life Journals: Designing & Using Handmade Books by Gwen Diehn is the book that I used to make my current journal and I love it. I would like to own it because it has all sorts of instructions for making various types of journals and ways to use them. If you've ever wanted to make your own journal I highly recommend it.

Cats and Post Christmas Blahs

Christmas has been good so far. We actually have several gift exchanges still spread out over the next 2 weeks but Christmas day for the most part was just the two of us. This year seemed to highlight how well we know each other with our gift choices.

Nearly everyone at my husband's job has some form of nerf weaponry. Up to this point he had been unarmed in the wars. Now he has a shiny new rifle. He told me after opening it that he had just been talking about that particular model with people at work and showing it to everyone online. Now he has his very own.

I knew my husband ordered me a book because it came to the house in a Barnes and Noble box, but there are so many books it could have been. After it arrived we had a conversation about how I think I need to find time to play more video games. Specifically the two newest Zelda games which I have started but never finished. So when I opened up my gift on Christmas morning and saw the Hyrule Historia it was pretty awesome. I really do feel like my husband knows me better than I know myself sometimes.

I'm not sure how much of it is allergies, or just post Christmas blahs, but I haven't been feeling great this weekend. I've slept way more than I should have but still feel tired. Hopefully I get to feeling better before the start of the New Year so I get some craft stuff started or maybe get a jump on organizing my craft room. At any rate our cats have been pretty happy with all the snuggle time and we've taken some adorable pictures.

We got the tree skirt on so Baldur could sit under the tree properly.

Curry being calm and not attacking the tree for once.

Merry Christmas To All

I know it's a little bit early but I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! I hope that everyone has a fantastic holiday and gets a chance to spend time with the people they care about.

We decided to decorate our tree in colors inspired by Star Wars lightsabers. Red, Green, and Aqua blue.

It is actually a slightly smaller tree then we normally have and we left off a lot of our decorations because of the new kitten. We didn't want to tempt him to climb it so we left off things like icicles and some of our unique special ornaments. Even so we have had a few casualties.

I got some cute little trees to use when wrapping gifts and couldn't resist the opportunity to play with some of our toys.

Tony asks Jarvis to analyze the trees and determine which is more 'festive'.
Lex Luthor and Tony Stark argue about who has the better tree.
Finally, I'm sure it's a coincendence but I'm happy to say that just about a week after I posted about the lack of Dungeons and Dragons themed paper snowflakes Wizards of the Coast posted some templates on their site. I've updated the geek snowflake to include them but you can see a few I made below.

Again Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy your holiday and any time off you may have and may the force be with you.

Death Star Fascinator Hat

While I was sewing our outfits for The Force Awakens I tried to think of something I could make as a fun accessory. I didn't really feel like I had time to make a purse... or at least not the random idea I had to try and make something that looked like a lightsaber hilt but was hollow and could double as a purse. I also wanted something that I could make without spending a lot of extra money on supplies so most of the jewelry ideas I came up with were out. I finally decided that I would try to make a fascinator style hat.

Here's the final result:

It didn't turn out exactly the way I intended and I ended up not actually wearing it to the movie for a variety of reasons but I thought I would share how I made it anyway. That way if anyone is inspired to make their own they can have a starting point and learn from my mistakes.

Supplies:

4 inch Styrofoam Ball (I used one labeled Smooth Foam)
Paint in 2 shades of grey
Felt for the base
Tulle in flame colors (1/8- 1/4 yard)
MicroMachine Tie fighter and Millennium Falcon (Used this set)
Thin Gauge Wire
 White Craft Glue
Needle and Thread for hand sewing or sewing machine
Clips or Hair pins to attach to head

Step One: Paint the Death Star

Even though the one I had was smoother to begin with I still painted it with gesso first. My thought was that since I was using craft paint I didn't want it to get sucked into the foam and dry unevenly. I think that if you used spray paint for the base color you could skip this step but I was trying to use up paint I already had. It ended up showing a lot of brush strokes even after I sanded it down a bit.

If you look closely you can still see a bit of the original texture on right hand a bit above the center.
Paint the base grey first then add details in darker grey. I started by painting over the center seam of the ball and adding in the circle for the laser array. After that I filled in using a random pattern of squares and rectangles.

As a side note, you can see in the above picture, I stuck a few push pins in a scrap board to make a tripod to set it on while painting/ drying.

Step Two: Cut down the Death Star

At this point it seemed a bit too big for my head and I felt like a flat base would be sturdier so I cut the base off at an angle.

Step Three: Cut Base

Find a piece of felt to use as the base and trace around the bottom of the Death Star. I used red because my goal was to make it look like the Death Star was in flames. (In spite of my husband's Imperial truck and how dark side our outfits look, I'm a Rebel.)

Step Four: Create Flames

Cut small strips of tulle and gather, bunch, and smoosh them into an arrangement that gives the impression of flames. You can put the Death Star on top and hold everything in place to get a general idea of how it will look.

After that pin everything down to the felt base and sew over the ends to hold the tulle in place.

Step Five: Prepare Ships

Twist the wire around the ships to secure them. We wanted to be able to use the ships for other things later so we needed a non-permanent way to attach them. Be sure to leave an extra long tail for attaching it to the base.

Our kitten kept trying to attack the Tie Fighter so I couldn't get a good picture but the wire is wrapped against the inside of the wing on one side.

Step Six: Attach Ships

Decide how high up you want the ships to be and test the placement. Bend the wires so the ends go under the styrofoam.

Make another bend and stick the end of the wire down into the foam. Place white craft glue over the hole and the wire along the base. Initially I used a clear glue but it melted the foam a bit and didn't hold correctly. The goal is first to make sure the wire doesn't fall out, and second keep it from turning and letting the ship fall to the side.

Step Seven: Attach Clips

Choose clips and sew them on to the base on the side opposite the tulle.

This is where I made the biggest mistake. The clips I used have to bend to open and close and once everything was assembled they were extremely hard to open and close, and that is the major reason I didn't wear it to the theatre. I knew it would be a pain to get on and off and that I'd need to remove it during the film. It was easier to just not deal with it. If I were to make something like this again I would most likely just add a few loops of ribbon to stick hairpins through.

Step Eight: Final Assembly

Use craft glue to attach felt base to the bottom of the foam Death Star.

Another change I would make would be to sandwich the tulle between two pieces of felt. I tried to get a good picture of it but it didn't work out well. Basically what happened is that the felt is glued to the tulle and the tulle is glued to the foam, but the felt and foam aren't really connected.

Here's a picture of us all dressed up and ready to celebrate.

The dress uses Simplicity Pattern 1155 and both the dress and shirt use glow-in-dark fabric from Joann Fabrics. You can see how I made my earrings and the shirt for my husband in these posts:

Even if the hat didn't work out at least our cats thought it was exciting.

Opening Night

First of all I want to apologize for posting this so late. I ended up sleeping in much later than I expected after our late night.

Here's a picture of us ready to go in our new outfits.

I did get my hat finished but ended up only wearing it for these pictures because it was difficult to get on and off and I didn't want to deal with the hassle of removing it at the theatre. I plan to share how it was made on Monday even though its not perfect. Hopefully it can be an inspiration or starting point for someone else to make a better version. That being said here a shot that gives a closer view.

Also the pictures don't show how much of a difference the tulle underskirt makes. Here are pictures of the dress with and without the underskirt.

Now on to the biggest question... What did we think of the movie?

We both really enjoyed the movie. And I'll admit it's really hard to talk about without giving any spoilers but here it goes. It is pretty emotional, exciting, funny, sad.  First of all we didn't notice any glaring plot holes or inconsistencies with the previous movies. Now sometimes in the excitement of a new release you miss stuff so there might be something that stands out when we see it again in a calmer setting.

Second I feel like they did a good job with character development. The characters from the previous movies have motives and issues separate from the previous movies and the new characters introduced all have their own struggles apart from the bigger battle between the Resistance and First Order.

I'm very interested to see where they go from this point. The implications of the events here will have far reaching consequences for the whole galaxy.

Finally I wanted to talk a little about the 3D. We went all out and saw the Force Awakens in IMAX 3D and you may be wondering if its worth the extra expense. There is quite a bit of 3D but not the entire movie. Where it stands out the most, in my opinion, are the space battles and shots of the scenery. That beautiful shot from the preview with the X-wings flying over the lake, really awesome in 3D. But if you don't care about depth in mountain ranges or tie fighters flying off the screen if would be fine to skip it. I really enjoyed the 3D but it's still going to be a great movies without it.

Almost Time!

I will not be making a regular post today because I am preoccupied with putting the finishing touches on our outfits for the Force Awakens. We have IMAX 3D tickets for 11pm and we can hardly wait! Check back tomorrow to see the finished product and a spoiler free review.
